A Google report, published ahead of the Munich Security Conference, highlights an alarming increase in cyber attacks, particularly among employees of defense companies. These state-sponsored cyber espionage campaigns target not only the military industry but also a wide range of companies in the US and Europe, including automotive and aerospace manufacturers. Analyst Luke McNamara emphasizes that the attacks are becoming increasingly personalized, targeting individuals directly, which makes them harder to detect.
The report also mentions an increase in extortion attacks against smaller companies that are not directly involved in the defense supply chain. Additionally, it is observed that hackers, including those supported by Russia, have developed advanced methods to compromise communication accounts of Ukrainian military personnel and to target drone units.
Outside of Europe, groups from North Korea and Iran are using similar tactics to target employees in the defense sector, including by creating fake recruitment portals. These attacks not only affect Ukrainian citizens but also extend the issue of cybersecurity to a transnational level, considering the involvement of foreign employees in projects related to Ukraine. Dr. Ilona Khmeleva warns that the number of victims will expand, turning cyber attacks into a global problem. https://informat.ro/en/international/google-warns-about-the-increase-in-targeted-cyberattacks-105673
